Characteristics

Plants up to 250 mm high. Stem flattened and broadly winged, 5-6 mm wide below first fertile node, lower fertile nodes bearing short branches, lateral flower clusters sessile. Leaves sword-shaped, mostly 10-25 mm wide, soft-textured, basal ± as long as stem, cauline progressively smaller above. Flower clusters few to several in lax racemose arrangement, mostly 2-to 4-flowered; spathes and bracts narrow, 4-5 mm long, green becoming rust-brown, apices attenuate. Flowers blue, on pedicels ± 3 mm long; tepals 6-8 x 2-3 mm. Filaments 2-3 mm long; anthers ± 1.5 mm long. Ovary 3-lobed, papillate; style ± 5 mm long; stigma lobes narrowly deltoid. Capsules deeply 3-lobed, 3.5-4.0 x 4.0-4.5 mm, wider than high, conspicuously warty. Seeds evidently 2 per locule in a single row, ± globose, surface reticulate.
