Characteristics

Plants (50-)80-150 mm high. Stem oval in section and narrowly 2-winged, 1.5-2.2 mm wide, unbranched, sometimes with 1 or 2 sessile lateral flower clusters. Leaves linear to sword-shaped, mostly 2-4 mm wide, fairly soft-textured, with narrow hyaline margins. Flower clusters 1 to 3, terminal cluster 2-flowered, lateral clusters usually 1-flowered; spathes subequal or unequal, green with membranous, hyaline or rust-coloured margins, 16-20 mm long, bracts ± dry, < 1/3 as long as spathes, sometimes minute, concealed in spathes. Flowers deep blue, outer tepals with a broad green strip outside; tepals unequal, outer 11-14 x 5-7 mm, inner 9-11 x 8-9 mm. Filaments ± 2 mm long; anthers ± 2.5 mm long. Ovary triangular-columnar, up to 12 mm long, on pedicels up to 2 mm long; style ± 6.5 mm long, stigma lobes slightly fringed. Capsules cylindric, 3-lobed, lobes with rounded to acute edges, (14-)20-25(-30) mm long. Seeds round in section, flattened or lightly concave at top and bottom, many per locule in a single row, sculpturing foveate, surface cells domed to papillate.
