Characteristics

Plants up to 400 mm high. Stems rounded, usually unbranched, or with 1 or 2 slender branches from lower cauline nodes, these often subtended by large inflated bracts, bearing several sessile lateral flower clusters. Leaves several, terete or broadly elliptic in section, 1.5-3.0 mm wide, fibrous, margins rounded, not differentiated. Flower clusters several, sessile except the terminal, each 2-to 4-flowered; spathes and bracts dry-membranous, rust-coloured, translucent on the edges, spathes ± 10 mm long. Flowers deep blue, ± sessile, tepals 12-16 mm long. Filaments ± 5-6 mm long; anthers ± 3.5 mm long. Style 6-7 mm long, minutely 3-notched. Capsules oblong in outline, narrowly 3-winged, 10-14 mm long. Seeds several, lamellate, densely papillate on margins.
