Characteristics

Plants 0.6-1.3 m high, growing singly. Stems ± terete to broadly elliptic in section, usually with 1 or 2 short branches, each bearing several sessile lateral flowering clusters; in fruit a new leafy shoot emerging from base. Leaves usually ± 4, lower 2 basal, reaching to ± base of flower clusters, centric, elliptic in cross section with rounded margins, 3-5 mm wide, fibrous. Flower clusters several, each mostly 5-or 6-flowered; spathes and bracts ovate, rust-coloured, becoming irregularly torn, 3-4 mm long. Flowers blue; tepals obovate, 20-25 x ± 15 mm, inner slightly larger than outer. Filaments 6-7 mm long; anthers ± 3.5 mm long. Ovary obovoid, obscurely 3-lobed; style ± 12 mm long, apex minutely 3-notched. Capsules oblong, narrowly 3-winged, (20-)25-33 mm long. Seeds lamellate, ± rectangular, up to 12 per locule, ± 3 x 2 mm, surface ± plane, with short-to long-papillate margins.
