Characteristics

Plants mostly 180-400 mm high. Stems broadly elliptic in section, divaricately 2-to several-branched, terete above first branch. Leaves several in a tight fan, linear, narrow, ± 2/3 as long as stem, sometimes longer, 3-4 mm wide, leathery and fibrotic, margins acute, hyaline. Flower clusters several, usually all stalked, (2)5-or 6-flowered; spathes and bracts ovate, spathes 6-7 mm long, bracts 7-8 mm long, rust-coloured, translucent toward edges, flecked with brown, sparsely hairy to scabrid. Flowers on pedicels ± 1 mm long, blue, yellow in throat edged darker blue; tepals obovate, 8-14 x 5-9 mm. Filaments ± 4 mm long; anthers ± 3 mm long. Ovary ± obconic in outline, 3-lobed, ± 3.5 mm long; style ± 8 mm long, apex minutely 3-notched. Capsules broadly 3-lobed (to ± winged), ± 7 mm long. Seeds radially compressed, irregularly 4-sided, (1)2 per locule, surface cells colliculate.
