Characteristics

Plants 350-800 mm high. Stem elliptic in section, simple or with one or more short, slender branches, lateral flower clusters sessile. Leaves linear to sword-shaped, ± 1/3 as long as stem, 4-8 mm wide, relatively firm-textured, pale green. Flower clusters several per axis in lax arrangement, each mostly 4-flowered; outer spathe green below, dry distally; inner spathes and bracts greenish-translucent below, dry and rust-brown above, becoming irregularly torn with age. Flowers ± sessile or on pedicels up to 2 mm long, deep blue; tepals subequal, 11-14 mm long. Filaments 3-5 mm long; anthers ± 2.5 mm long; Style 7-9 mm long; stigma lobes ± wedge-shaped. Capsules ovoid, sessile, ± 7 mm long, slightly 3-lobed. Seeds angular-prismatic, sculpturing foveate.

Spathes rusty brown, becoming torn with age. Bracts ovate, with dark triangle at base, midvein raised, torn, apex acute, usually lacerated. Inflorescence usually terminal or lateral, binate rhipidia, with blue to deep purple flowers; outer tepals ± equal to inner ones. Ovary with trilobed stigma; lobes fan-shaped, finely crested. Flowering time Sept.-Mar. Capsule oblong.
Robust, perennial herb, up to 0.93 m high. Bracts with a raised midvein, dark rusty-brown. Scape transversely elliptic and slightly ancipitous. Margins of upper cauline leaves narrowly hyaline-margined. Flowers blue.
