Characteristics

Plants 200-400 mm high, forming tufts up to 80 mm diam. Stem broadly elliptic in section, rarely with a single slender branch, bearing 1 or 2 sessile flower clusters. Leaves several, mostly basal, linear or terete, 1-2 mm wide. Flower clusters 1 to 3, sessile except the terminal, 2-to 4-flowered; spathes greenish with translucent margins becoming dry above, 15-18 mm long, bracts dry-membranous, shorter than spathes. Flowers on pedicels 8-10 mm long, large, lilac to cream-coloured, rarely pale yellow, with a large dark mark toward base of outer tepals; outer tepals obliquely obovate, 20-22 x ± 12 mm, inner fiddle-shaped, 24-28 x 15-18 mm. Filaments ± 6.5 mm long; anthers ± 4.5 mm long, yellow; pollen light orange. Ovary cylindric-trigonous, slightly curved, 12-15 mm long, rapidly elongating after fertilization; style 9-10 mm long, dividing into three short, broad, fringed lobes ± 1.3 mm long, white with purple fringes. Capsules elongate, woody, indehiscent, 20-30 mm long. Seeds triangular-columnar, many per locule, arranged in a single vertical row.
