Characteristics

Perianth greenish in lower part, dark purple to crimson-brown in upper part, shortly pilose mainly along veins outside; limb puberulous or ± glabrous inside, pilose in throat;constricted part below the utricle 1–2 mm long; inflated part (utricle) 2.5–7 mm in diameter, subglobose; tube straight, 5–16 ? 1–2 mm, cylindrical, dilated at apex; limb 13–35 ? 2–8 mm, narrowly ligulate or oblong elliptic.

Leaves 1.5–9(10) ? 1–6(8) cm, ovate to ovate-oblong, obtuse to subacute and sometimes mucronate at the apex, rounded to subtruncate at the base; lamina with 5(7) principal longitudinal veins from the base, glabrous above, usually shortly pilose on the veins below, sometimes sparsely so; veins prominent below; petioles 2–10(13) mm long, shortly pilose.
Flowers solitary in leaf axils, rarely 2(3?), or in short racemose inflorescences; pedicels (including ovary) 8–15 mm long, puberulous to shortly pilose; bracts leaf-like, 4–12 ? 1.5–7 mm, ovate to elliptic or lanceolate, acute at the apex, rounded to cuneate at the base, ± glabrous above, shortly pilose mainly on veins below, sometimes sparsely so.
Fruit a 6-ribbed capsule, 1.5–2.7 ? 1–1.8 cm, oblong-pyriform, apex rounded, base attenuate into stipe 3–7 mm long, sparsely pilose mainly along ribs to glabrous; the mature capsule and stipe split longitudinally into 6 segments which remain joined to the pedicel by the elements of the stipe.
Seeds 5–6.5 ? 3.5–5 mm, triangular with rounded corner and curled margins (in dried state at least), creamy-yellow, smooth with thick cuneate raphe down middle of one side sometimes ± equalling the seed in width.
Stems trailing, up to c. 40 cm long, usually sulcate and angular (in dried state at least), puberulous to shortly pilose, sometimes sparsely so.
