Characteristics

Scandent, up to 3 m high. Stems smooth, grey, bearing short, reflexed spines. Young branches and branchlets widely spaced, minutely papillate and somewhat ridged when young. Cladodes aggregated in upper half of short branchlets, flat, narrowly linear, ±15-20 x 1.5 mm, apiculate, drying a dark grey. Inflorescence a compound raceme, ±50 mm long. Flowers in fascicles of 1-3, subtended by a membranous bract bearing a small spine below; tepals oblong, ±3 mm long, smooth and obtuse above, cream. Stamens yellow. Ovary with ovules 15 cm each locule; ovoid; attenuated into 3 short stigmas. Berry not seen.
