Scrambling and climbing herb, with a short branching rhizome. Stems often wiry, to c. 2 m long, with scale leaves, spines absent. Cladodes 3 of unequal size per bract-scale leaf axil, linear-lanceolate, falcate, tapering to base and apex, apiculate, 5–15 mm long, 0.5–1.5 mm wide, flattened, univeined, glabrous. Flowers 1–3 per axil, pendent, bisexual, 5–7 mm diam.; pedicel (5–) 8–12 (–15) mm long, articulated 3–5 mm from base. Sepals and petals (perianth segments) linear-oblong, 3–4 mm long, 1.5–2 mm wide, spreading, white to pinkish white. Stamens 6, 2.5–3.5 mm long; filaments filiform, white, with minute basal spur; anthers 0.5–1 mm long, yellow. Ovary globose, c. 1 mm long; style c. 1 mm long; stigma capitate or minutely trifid. Berry globular or compressed-globular to ±ovoid, 5–7 mm diam., red. Seed 1, globose, c. 3 mm diam.

Cladodes in threes, occasionally 2, 4, or 5 at each node, spreading in one plane, 5-15 × 0.8-1.5 mm, one conspicuously longer, flattened, linear-lanceolate, falcate, 1-veined. Flowers 3-4 mm long, solitary, axillary, white, rarely pale pink; pedicel c. 10 mm long. Berry globose, ± 8 mm diam., red. Seed solitary, ± 4 mm diam., globose, black.
