Erect shrubs 0.5– 1 m high, rigid, spiny, from a woody rootstock; stems many, striate, the ridges bearing minute, sharp, transparent cells, rarely smooth, brown when young, grey with age branches simple, bearing overlapping cladodes in fascicles; spines on main stems sharp, 4– 10 mm long, straight to recurved; spinules present below each fascicle, 3– 4.5 mm long.. Cladodes 3– 10 per fascicle, filiform (somewhat triangular in cross section), 20– 40(– 65) mm long, turning dark when dry, deciduous, absent at time of flowering.. Inflorescence: flowering branchlet 2.5– 15 cmlong or more; flowers usually paired, placed close together along branchlets; bracts membranous, fimbriate, ovate, ± 2.5 mm long; pedicels ± 2 mm long, terminating in a swollen disc below the perianth..
