Stiff, erect, shrubs 30 cm to 1 m high; stems solitary or 2– 4, thin, branching in ± regular fashion in the upper half or so, angled, ± without spines, sometimes without cladodes, glabrous.. Cladodes in fascicles of 2– 3, filiform, angled, 4– 12 mm long, unequal.. Flowers solitary, pendulous, along the branches; bracts ovate, 1× 0.5 mm, acute at apex; pedicel 4.5– 8 mm long, articulated in lower half, elongating to 10 mm long in fruit.. Tepals white to yellowish, slightly unequal, 3– 4.5× 0.5– 1 mm, outer ones smaller than the inner ones; stamens 6, attached to the perianth; ovary globose, 3-locular with 4(– 6) ovules in each locule; style exserted at anthesis, 2– 3 mm long, as long as the ovary.. Berry greenish when young, turning yellow to red at maturity, 1– 2-lobed, 4– 7 mm in diameter; seeds black.
