Stems clustered on a stout taproot and caudex, 2–6 dm, strigillose; lfls 15–31, narrow, 1–3.5 cm, strigillose beneath; racemes 5–10 cm, long-peduncled, with 20–70 nodding, ochroleucous fls 15–20 mm; cal-tube 5–6 mm, the subulate lobes 1.5–3 mm; fr drooping, linear-oblong, 2–3 cm, glabrous, triquetrous, the upper suture acute, the lower side flattened or broadly sulcate; stipe 3.5–7 mm; 2n=24. Badlands and gullies, often in seleniferous soil; Sask., N.D., and S.D. to Utah and n. Mex., and reported from w. Minn. May, June. Ours is var. racemosus. (Tium r.)
