Characteristics

Subshrub, up to 1 m high, with many axillary buds. Stems one or several, branched, white-tomentose. Leaves alternate, sessile; blade narrowly ovate or linear, to narrowly linear, up to 35 x 12 mm, apex acute, upper surface glabrous, lower surface white-felted, margins revolute; glandular hairs absent or on leaf margins only. Heads radiate, sessile, in a spike or racemose on side branches, or in leaf axils. Involucre turbinate; involucral bracts 9-12-seriate, apices acute, white-tomentose. Receptacle epaleate. Flowers: ray florets female, fertile, pale to dark purple; disc florets bisexual, yellow; Sep., Oct. Fruit with cypsela narrowly oblong, 4-6-ribbed, glabrous, ± 1.7 x 0.45 mm. Pappus biseriate, an outer row of scales and an inner row of 9-12 subbarbellate bristles.
