Characteristics

Prostrate to ascending perennial to 30 cm high, monoecious. Branches slender. Leaves subsessile, narrow to broadly-elliptic or oblanceolate, 10–25 mm long, acute to obtuse, entire or sinuate, scurfy beneath, glabrescent to sparsely scurfy above. Male flowers in small glomerules in axils of terminal leaves. Female flowers in axillary clusters. Fruiting bracteoles sessile or with a slender stipe to 2 mm long, obtriangular to fan-shaped, flat, 3–10 mm long, 3–5 mm wide, basal portion united into a deltoid tube, upper portion free, herbaceous, sinuate-dentate or acutely toothed; tube bearing on both sides 2–4 spreading spine-like appendages c. 1 mm long. Seed circular; radicle lateral, erect.
