Characteristics

Divaricately branched shrub, c. 50 cm high, monoecious. Leaves sessile, erect, deeply concave and partially clasping the branch; frequently congested on dwarf lateral shoots; lamina broadly ovate, 4–8 mm long, apex acute and often recurved, base rounded or cordate, margin entire or with 2–4 teeth, scaly or with a grey sheen, sometimes glabrous with age. Male flowers in axillary glomerules, c. 0.6 mm diam., towards apex of branches. Female flowers axillary, solitary, obscured by the subtending leaf. Fruiting bracteoles sessile, united except at apex, oblong; apex 3-toothed; base rounded; in all c. 2.5 mm long, 1.5 mm wide.
