Characteristics

Annual herb, up to 0.8 m high. Stems erect or decumbent; yellowish. Leaves subsessile or shortly petiolate; blade ovate to narrowly ovate, 6-30 x 4-15 mm, base cuneate, apex acute, margins involute and deeply incised, both surfaces mealy lepidote. Flowers: male in axils of upper, much-reduced leaves; female in lower leaves; fruiting bracteoles sessile, blade broadly rhomboid or subrhomboid, free apices semi-orbicular to broadly triangular, base cuneate, margins irregularly toothed, outer surface slightly pilose-lepidote with conspicuous wart-like tubercles; Jan.-Mar.

Annual, dwarf shrub, 0.6-0.8 m high, profusely, whitish branched. Leaves 40 x 20 mm, triangular-deltoid or oblong-ovate, sinuately lobed, base petiole-like, underside prominently nerved, whitish squamose (covered with coarse scales). Male and female flowers in mixed clusters at end of branches. Fruiting bracts up to 50 mm long and equally broad, roundish deltoid, central basal part hardened, upper free part herbaceous, serrate or 3-5-lobed, mostly with 1 or 2 tubercular appendages. Seed up to 2 mm in diam.
