Characteristics

Prostrate herb with wiry branches, monoecious. Leaves shortly petiolate, narrowly elliptic to narrowly obovate, 5–20 mm long, entire to remotely denticulate, scurfy lepidote below, sparsely scurfy above. Male flowers in small glomerules in terminal axils. Female flowers solitary or paired in leaf axils. Fruiting bracteoles scurfy, shortly stipitate (c. 1 mm), free to base, flat, deltoid, 3–6 mm long, acute, toothed, several short spine-like appendages present on each face (these sometimes united at their base to form a spiny semicircular rim). Seed semicircular; radicle lateral, erect.
