Perennial herb or shrub, up to 2 m high. Stems erect. Leaves leathery, densely scaly, grey, shortly petiolate; blade elliptic to oblong-elliptic, apex obtuse, margins entire, occasionally both sides in lower part with a simple blunt tooth. Flowers: in ± terminal, loose, pyramidshaped pseudopanicles, female inflorescences often cluster-like; fruiting bracteoles leaf-like, membranous, rounded to triangular, divided to near base, glabrescent when old, shiny, light yellow; Jan.-Mar.

Male inflorescences: flower clusters in terminal, loose pseudo-spikes, regularly spaced along branches. Fruiting bracts subrotund, softly papery, glabrescent and warty, 10-15 mm long.
