Characteristics

Shrub, erect to sprawling, 0.5-2.5 m high, dioecious. Leaves needle-like to spathulate, 45-100 x 1-3 mm. Male inflorescence lax, terminal, stalked, spike-like raceme, 30-50 mm long, in axillary clusters of 5-15. Female inflorescence terminal, stalked, dense, involucrate foliaceous head, formed by 8-15 axillary branches bearing female flowers. Male flowers: perianth glabrous, tubular, straight; segments free; linear-acute; anthers subsessile; filaments from base of perianth; style straight, terete, thickened towards apex forming a pollen presenter. Female flowers: ovary ovoid, densely pubescent; style terete, 6-8 mm long, tip bilobed; perianth glabrous, widened proximally, tapering distally; limbs linear-lanceolate, recurved at anthesis; staminodes filiform-linear. Flowering time Nov.-Feb. Fruit a pubescent achene, 4-ridged, dense, white cilia on 2 median ridges.

An erect to sprawl ing shrub 0.5-2.5 m tall, with a si ngle main stem. Leaves needle-like to spatulate, 45-100 mm long, 1-3 mm wide, with a channel on the upper swface. Male flowerhead a lax, terminal, stalked raceme, 30-50 mm long, axi llary, borne in clusters of 5-15. Style thread-like, 6-7 mm long, tip a club-shaped to cylindrical pollen presenter. Female flowerhead a tenninal, globose, stalked cup formed by 20-38 cmwardly curved bundles of axillary branches and bearing stalked female flowers on a sho1t central axis. Style 6-8 mm long, tip bilobed. Fruits with 4 prominent vertical ridges, of which the 2 median ridges are frúinged with long white hairs, and a network of smaller ridges connect them.
