Characteristics

An erect, sparsely branched shrub up to 3 m tall, arising from a large subterranean rootstock. Leaves needle-like to linear; 40-110 mm long, 1-5 mm wide, red when young. Male flowerhead a lax, terminal, stalked raceme, 30-60 mm long, axillary, in clusters of 5-15. Style thread-like, 6-7 mm long, tip a club-shaped to cylindrical pollen presenter. Female flowerhead an open cup formed by 8-12 inwardly curved lateral branches and containing stalked female flowers and sterile male flowers on a central conical column; borne in flat-topped clusters. Style 5-8 mm long, tip club-shaped. Fruits with 6 prominent, hair-fringed ridges.
