Characteristics

Plants 80-150 mm high, including leaves. Stem short, smooth. Leaves crowded basally, up to 6, oblong, (20-)30-100 x 8-18(-30) mm, leathery, pleated, abruptly truncate, smooth or finely velvety hairy. Spike compact, borne at ground level, 2-to 5(-7)-flowered; bracts green with brown attenuate tips, smooth or lightly hairy, 25-50 mm long, inner ± as long as outer, forked apically, basal margins sometimes fused around ovary for ± 2 mm. Flowers zygomorphic, pale blue to violet, lower lateral tepals with white median marks outlined dark violet to purple below, evidently odourless or sweetly scented; perianth tube 40-60 mm long, cylindric, straight, widening slightly in upper 8 mm; tepals spreading, subequal or upper three slightly larger, 26-32(-40) x 6-12 mm, upper laterals fused to lower for ± 2 mm. Stamens unilateral; filaments unilateral, 15-18 mm long, exserted 9-10 mm; anthers ± 6(-11) mm long, pale yellow to cream-coloured. Ovary smooth, lower flowers shortly stalked; style dividing opposite anther bases or opposite anther apices, branches ± 6 mm long, arching outward between or over anthers.

Stemless, cormous geophyte, up to 150 mm tall, simple or branched below ground. Leaves crowded basally, abruptly truncate, smooth or sparsely hairy, exceeding the flowers. Flowers mostly 2-5 in a compact, decumbent spike, bilabiate, blue to violet with white nectar guides, perianth tube 40-60 mm long, slender, straight, tepals cupped, subequal, ovary smooth, bracts smooth or finely velvety, inner forked apically.
