Characteristics

Plants 80-140 mm high, including leaves. Stem reaching shortly above ground or subterranean, densely hairy, occasionally with 1 or 2 branches. Leaves lanceolate to sword-shaped, lightly twisted, shortly velvety, 6-11(-15) mm wide. Spike decumbent, 2-to 5-flowered; bracts green with dry brown tips, velvety, 24-35 mm long, inner often slightly longer than outer, forked apically. Flowers zygomorphic, pale to deep blue with white splashes on lower tepals, strongly spicy-acrid scented with undertones of violet; perianth tube funnel-shaped, 18-20 mm long, lower part ± 12 mm long, thick-walled and blocked in lower half; tepals lanceolate, dorsal 45-55 x 13 mm, margins undulate, upper laterals joined to lower 3 tepals for ± 8 mm, lower tepals joined basally for ± 4 mm, ± 35 mm long. Stamens unilateral; filaments arched, ± 10 mm long, hairy at base, shortly exserted from upper part of tube; anthers 8-9 mm long, pale bluish; pollen off-white. Ovary smooth; style arching over stamens.
