Spike suberect, compact, mostly 4-to 12-flowered; bracts green with dry and rust-coloured tips, outer obtuse to truncate or tridentate, (11-)15-25 mm long, inner ± half as long to only slightly shorter than outer, divided to base. Flowers zygomorphic, pale to dark blue-violet, lower lateral tepals with white to cream-coloured or pale yellow with violet edges, usually acrid-scented, occasionally evidently odourless; perianth tube narrowly funnel-shaped, (10-)12-18(-25) mm long; tepals unequal, dorsal 25-35 mm long, lower joined to upper laterals for 3-5 mm and to one another for ± 2.5 mm, forming a prominent lip, lower 15-18 mm long. Stamens unilateral; filaments arched, 13-16 mm long; anthers 5-7 mm long, violet or pale turquoise. Ovary densely hairy; style dividing between middle and apex of anthers, branches 3-4 mm long.
