Characteristics

Plants 60-100 mm high. Stem short, decumbent, rarely extended above ground, simple or 1-or 2-branched. Leaves crowded basally, abruptly truncate and wedge-shaped, lightly pleated, usually finely hairy. Spike congested, 6-to 10-flowered; bracts ± smooth to velvety, 20-38 mm long, inner slightly shorter than outer, forked apically. Flowers zygomorphic, blue to violet with white median marks often edged red on lower lateral tepals; perianth tube elongate, sharply bent below apex, ± 50 mm long; tepals unequal, dorsal largest and held somewhat apart, ± 20 mm long, lower tepals joined to upper laterals for short distance and to one another for ± 2 mm, forming a lip, 15-17 mm long. Stamens unilateral; filaments ± 15 mm long, well exserted from tube; anthers 6-7 mm long. Ovary smooth; style dividing opposite lower half of anthers; style ± 4 mm long.
