Characteristics

Plants 150-350 mm high. Stem flexed nearly horizontally, often with widely diverging branches, lightly velvety at least below. Leaves lanceolate, pleated, velvety. Spike inclined, secund, many-flowered; bracts initially green but usually completely dry and brown at flowering, smooth, 10-13 mm long, outer tricuspidate with long central awn, inner shorter than outer, divided to base. Flowers zygomorphic, inverted, with perianth tube recurved and facing spike apex, dorsal tepal horizontal, unilateral stamens curved back to lie above dorsal tepal and lower tepals suberect, blue with yellow or white markings on lower lateral tepals; perianth tube narrowly funnel-shaped, 6-8 mm long; tepals unequal, dorsal largest, 18-20 mm long, lower shortly joined below, 14-17 mm long. Stamens unilateral; filaments arching over dorsal tepal, 12-14 mm long; anthers facing spike apex, ± 6 mm long, yellow; pollen yellow. Ovary smooth; style dividing opposite anther tips, branches 3-4 mm long.
