Characteristics

Plants 120-250 mm high. Stem smooth, erect, mostly 2-to 6-branched, sheathed basally by woolly or cobwebby cataphylls. Leaves lanceolate, with sheaths often woolly or cobwebby, blades ± plane with few prominent veins, reaching to ± base of spike, loosely twisted, undulate and crisped, margins of sheath and upper margin of blade long-hairy, margins thickened, dark green. Spike inclined, lax, several-flowered; bracts smooth, green below, dry and brown in upper half, 8-10 mm long, inner as long as outer, forked to ± middle. Flowers zygomorphic, pale blue-mauve, lower tepals yellow with pale blue tips, lower laterals also with dark violet median mark, sweetly scented; perianth tube funnel-shaped, 8-9 mm long; tepals unequal, clawed, dorsal tepal held apart from others, initially arcuate, later erect, ± 28 mm long, lower 3 shortly united, 12-14 x 3 mm. Stamens unilateral; filaments arcuate, 20 mm long; anthers connate, ± 7 mm long. Ovary smooth; style mostly dividing opposite upper half of anthers, sometimes beyond anther tips, branches ± 1.5 mm long.

Flowers several in a lax inclined spike, bilabiate, blue with yellow markings, perianth tube 8-9 mm long, dorsal tepal ± 28 mm long, recurving, anthers fused together, ovary smooth, bracts smooth, inner forked to middle. Late Aug.-Sept.
