Characteristics

Plants 80-150 mm high. Corm globose; tunics coarsely fibrous. Stem smooth, inclined, smooth, 1-or 2-branched, enclosed below ground by a thick collar of fibres and sheathed by cobwebby to woolly cataphylls. Leaves sword-shaped to lanceolate, margins broadly undulate and lightly crisped, twisted above, with prominent midrib, hairless or ciliate on margins, sometimes only near tips. Spike inclined to horizontal, 3-to 5-flowered in 2 ranks; bracts smooth, 8-15 mm long, inner forked in upper 1/3. Flowers zygomorphic, pale mauve or dull yellow, lower lateral tepals darker yellow-green in midline, lower median with spear-shaped, purple mark, evidently unscented; perianth tube ± 7 mm long; tepals unequal, abruptly narrowed below into claws, dorsal largest, widely arched, later curving back, 20-25 mm long, lower tepals joined to upper laterals for 3-4 mm and to one another for 3-6 mm, with prominent auriculate lobes above base of limbs, 12-14 mm long. Stamens unilateral; filaments ± 15 mm long; anthers 4.5-6.0 mm long. Ovary smooth; style dividing opposite anther bases, branches ± 2 mm long.
