Characteristics

Plants 100-150(-350 under bushes) mm high. Stem sharply inclined, simple or with 1 or 2 widely diverging branches, sheathed by smooth cataphylls, with collar of fibres around base. Leaves oblong to lanceolate, blades held ± at right angles to sheaths, 40-60 x 6-10(-18) mm, scarcely plicate, undulate in concertina fashion, twisted above and erect, smooth, veins lightly thickened. Spike horizontal, flexuose, 7-to 10-flowered; bracts smooth, 4.0-6.5 mm long, inner forked to ± middle. Flowers zygomorphic, blue-mauve, lower lateral tepals yellow, sweetly scented; perianth tube narrowly funnel-shaped, 6-8 mm long; tepals unequal, clawed, dorsal 23-27 mm long, lower tepals joined to upper laterals for 3-5 mm and to one another for ± 2 mm, 12-14 mm long, lower laterals with conspicuous auriculate lobes just above limb base. Stamens unilateral; filaments 15-17 mm long; anthers ± 5 mm long. Ovary smooth; style dividing opposite middle to upper 1/3 of anthers, branches 3-4 mm long.
