Characteristics

Tree to 30 m tall; branchlets ferrugineous-pubescent, glabrescent, with scattered lenticels. Leaves subcoriaceous, glabrescent, obovate-oblong, acuminate; lamina 10–16 cm long, 4–5 cm wide, the base cuneate; secondary veins of 7–10 pairs at 70–90° to midvein, looping well within margin; petiole glabrescent, mostly 15–20 mm long. Pedicels pubescent to glabrescent, 1.5–2.5 mm long, subtended by minute bracts. Calyx sparsely pubescent; lobes acuminate or rounded. Petals glabrous, imbricate, ovate, concave, 4–5 mm long; epipetalous scale 2–2.5 mm long. Male flowers: filaments tapered, glabrous, 3–3.5 mm long; anthers 2.5 mm long, with a few hairs at apex. Female flowers: staminodal filaments glabrous, tapered; ovary glabrescent, subglobose, c. 3 mm long; stigmas glabrous, 1.8 mm long; ovules broadly attached to thick ovary wall. Berry with fleshy, firm, orange pericarp, 1– or 2–seeded, globose, 30–32 mm diam. when 1–seeded; transversely ellipsoidal, 40–43 mm long, 28–30 mm wide when 2–seeded. Seeds c. 1.5 cm diam.
