Deciduous tree 6–21 m. high, occasionally branching very low and becoming double-stemmed; bark rough, dark grey or brown; branchlets armed with single or paired axillary spines, occasionally unarmed; spines 1–4.3 cm. long, straight, if paired one is shorter than the other.. Leaves trifoliolate, some occasionally unifoliolate by abortion, glabrous; petiole 1.5–3.5(–4.5) cm. long, cylindrical; petiolule 2–10 mm. long on the lateral leaflets, 12–30 mm. long on the terminal leaflet; leaflets elliptic to ovate-lanceolate, variable in size, with the terminal leaflet always larger than the laterals, 5–14 cm. long, 2–6.5 cm. broad, acuminate or acute at the apex, cuneate at the base, irregularly crenulate, semicoriaceous; midvein prominent beneath especially towards the petiolule, lateral nerves 7–10 pairs; pellucid gland-dots dark and numerous..
