Characteristics

Shrub to 70 cm, with lignotuber. Stems slender, tomentose, usually with slender prophylls at base and undeveloped inflorescences. Leaves: petiole to 5 mm long; lamina linear, pinnatisect, 3-14 cm long, 4-7 mm wide, emarginate with obtuse recurved mucro, white-tomentose below; margins revolute; teeth 15-50 each side, triangular, obtusely mucronate. Inflorescence on old stem, occasionally terminal; involucral bracts subulate; outer bracts slender, 3-4 cm long, hirsute-plumose; flowers 30-45 per head. Perianth 25-35 mm long, cream in lower half, dull purple above, densely hirsute above base; limb 8-13 mm long, with a few caducous long hairs at apex, otherwise glabrous. Pistil straight, 24-35 mm long, cream, pubescent at base, glabrous above; pollen presenter not thickened, 6-10 mm long, obscurely ribbed. Follicles few, obovate, 16-24 mm long, tomentose.
