Characteristics

Shrub or small tree up to 5(–10) m. high.. Young stems glabrous.. Leaves: petiole 2–5 mm. long, the upper and lower pulvini confluent and no interpulvinary part visible; lamina ovate-or elliptic-or lanceolate-acuminate, 3–9.5 cm. long, 1.5–4.5 cm. wide, with a pronounced “drip-tip”, rounded and often somewhat asymmetrical at the base, coriaceous; both surfaces glabrous except occasionally for a few hairs at the base of the midrib on the lower surface or on the petiole.. Flowers solitary or in pairs in the axils of foliage leaves; pedicels 0.4–1.5(–2.4) cm. long, glabrous to shortly pubescent especially in the upper part; bracteoles ± semicircular, inserted immediately beneath the calyx and forming a cupule 1–2 mm. long.. Calyx 15–19 mm. long, glabrous except usually for a small patch of short hairs at the apex, splitting down one side only.. Petals white with a yellow blotch near the base, (15–)17–25 mm. long.. Stamen-filaments glabrous; anthers 2.5–3 mm. long.. Ovary blackish, glabrous.. Pods 6–9 × 1.5–2.2 cm., brown.
