Characteristics

A small trailing shrublet. Branches terete, hispid and with white, curly hairs. Leaves shortly petioled, cordate to ovate, ± 1 cm long, ±.7 cm broad, apex cuspidate, coriaceous, entire, mid-rib and ± 3 pairs of lateral nerves distinct and raised on the lower side, glabrescent on the upper face, hispid and with white, curly hairs on the margin and nerves on the lower face. Cystoliths distinct.Inflorescence a unilateral 3-6-flowered cyme; bracts, bracteoles and sepals enlarged in fruit. The sterile bracts and bracteoles form a double, horizontal row at the base, while the fertile ones are erect, like the sepals. Bracts and bracteoles oblanceolate, acuminate into a 2-3 mm long spine, ±12 mm long (including the spine); the sterile bracts and bracteoles ± 4 mm broad, the fertile ones ± 6 mm; three-nerved, the lateral nerves running parallel to the margin, with the nerves prominent on the lower face, glabrescent on the upper face, hispid and with white curly hairs on the lower side, enlarged in fruit up to twice its original size. Calyx enlarged in fruit; posticous sepal obovate, acuminate and spinous, 17 mm long (including the ± 2 mm long apical spine, 6 mm broad, hispid, herbaceous, with white, curly hair and with stipitate glands on the outer face, pilose and shiny on the inner face, when in fruit, 22 mm long (including the 4 mm long apical spine) and 12 mm broad, coriaceous, margin denticulate with bristly hairs crowning the teeth, prominently 9-nerved. Anticous sepal like the posticous, but smaller and apex sometimes bidentate, mucronate. Inner sepals linear, about half as long as the anticous sepal, pilose and glandular pubescent. Corolla ±17 mm long, minutely puberulous, tube cylindric, narrowed above the base, nearly twice as long as the limb subregular, 5-lobed. Stamens situated in the middle of the tube, minutely glandular pubescent at the base; perfect stamens with fairly thick filaments, 5 mm long, anthers just exserted, 2 mm long. Imperfect stamens with short filaments, 2 with small polliniferous diverging loculi, the third bearing a rudimentary anther.Ovary glabrous, style filiform ±10 mm long, glabrous, with a ring of very short hair at the base. Stigma capitate, thickened. Capsule glabrous, 19 mm long, 6 mm broad, crowned with the persistent style-base and more or less persistent ring of hairs.
