Characteristics

Perennial herb or subshrub 30-40 cm tall; stems with anvil-shaped strigose hairs, young stems with short spreading glandular hairs; mature stems with pale greyish bark, glabrescent. Leaf buds densely pale-strigose. Leaves ovate or elliptic, 3-5 x 1.2-2 cm, base cuneate or attenuate, apex acute, soon glabrescent except sparsely strigose on margin and midrib beneath; lateral veins 3-4 pairs; petiole 0-4 mm. Inflorescences axillary towards stem apex, single-flowered; bracts foliaceous; bracteoles linear or oblanceolate, 6-15 x 1-2.5 mm, strigose and with short spreading glandular hairs; peduncle 1.5-5 mm long; pedicel 0-1.5 mm long. Calyx somewhat accrescent; anterior lobe ovate, 10-13.5 x 5-6.5 mm, apex attenuate, entire or bifid with linear lobes 0.8-3 mm long, strigose especially along margin and principal veins, with short spreading glandular hairs, venation subparallel; posterior lobe 13-20 x 7.5-9 mm, margin involute, partially enveloping anterior lobe, apex attenuate; lateral lobes lanceolate, 6-9 mm long. Corolla 32-44 mm long, white, with or without purple guidelines, glabrous externally; tube cylindrical, 15-19 mm long, expanded somewhat towards mouth; limb in 1+3 arrangement; abaxial lobe 13-17 x 8-10.5 mm, offset by 2-5 mm, lateral lobes 15-21 x 7.5-9.5 mm, adaxial lobe 14.5-19 x 5-9 mm, apex emarginate or lobed up to 3 mm. Stamens attached 6-7 mm from corolla base; filaments 20-26 mm long; anthers 3-4 mm; lateral staminodes to 0.5 mm. Ovary densely pubescent; style glabrous or with few hairs at base; stigma 1.4-2 mm long. Capsule 13.5-16 mm long, shortly pubescent. Seeds 6-8 x 4.3-5 mm.
