Characteristics

Spiny perennial herb or subshrub 5-60 cm tall, from a woody rootstock; stems with upper internodes puberulous on two opposite sides, later glabrescent. Axillary spines (2) 4-rayed, sessile or stalk to 1 mm long, longest ray 6-16 mm long. Leaves coriaceous with conspicuous white cartilaginous marginal rim, elliptic or somewhat obovate, 2.5-5.5 x 1-3.5 cm, base cuneate or attenuate, apex (sub)attenuate into stiff mucro, glabrous or midrib strigose beneath, broad sessile glands clustered towards base beneath; petiole 0-6 mm. Inflorescnce axillary but clustered towards stem apex, forming a ± defined short spike to 5.5 cm long; bracts foliaceous but often reduced and more broadly obovate, typically 10-26 x 6-24 mm, apex often rounded and abruptly narrowed into a prominent mucro; bracteoles whitish except for darker midrib, linear-lanceolate or pairs at spike base oblanceolate, 8-15 x 0.7-1.5 (2.5) mm, midrib strigose. Calyx green(-brown) with paler margin; outer lobes subequal, ovate or lanceolate, anterior lobe 6-10 x 3-4 mm, posterior lobe 7-11.5 mm long, apex long attenuate into flexible spine, often notched on anterior lobe, venation inconspicuous, external surface glabrous except for occasional sunken glands, rarely strigulose along midrib; lateral lobes 6.5-9 mm long. Corolla 34.5-45.5 mm long, yellow or apricot-yellow, glabrous externally; tube 12.5-19 mm long; limb in 4+1 arrangement; abaxial lobe 8-14.5 x 4.5-7 mm, offset by 7-11 mm; lateral lobes 12-19.5 x 7-11 mm, adaxial lobes slightly narrower. Stamens with filaments 18.5-19.5 mm long, shortly pubescent in proximal half; anthers (3) 3.5-4.2 mm; lateral staminodes 1-2.7 mm, pilose, antherodes 0.6-1 mm. Ovary glabrous; stigma linear, 1.2-1.9 mm long. Capsule 13.5-17.5 mm long, glabrous. Only immature seeds seen, c.5.5 mm wide.
