Characteristics

Scrambling or scandent perennial herb 15-350 cm tall, with numerous erect or decumbent leafy branches from sprawling or trailing woody stems; stems 4-angular, with ascending or appressed pale buff to yellowish eglandular hairs and often few to numerous spreading glandular hairs, with or without a line of short retrorse hairs in opposite furrows. Leaves ovate, 1.8-10.5 x 1-5.3 cm, base cordate to obtuse, rarely acute to attenuate, apex acute to obtuse, surfaces pubescent, often rather densely so beneath, hairs more coarse on margin and veins beneath, finer and more spreading elsewhere; lateral veins 4-6 pairs; blade sessile or petiole to 20 mm. Inflorescence axillary, 1-2-flowered, subsessile; bracts foliaceous; bracteoles linear or oblanceolate, 2-7.5 x 0.2-0.5 (1) mm, with dense pale ascending or appressed hairs. Anterior calyx lobe ovate to elliptic, rarely obovate, 7-13.5 x 4-10.5 mm, base shortly attenuate to rounded, margin with 4-7 minute to elongate teeth, each with an apical bristle, rarely subentire, apex notched for 1-2 mm, indumentum as leaves, usually also with a few glandular hairs at least along margin; posterior lobe ovate, 10.5-18.5 x 5.5-12.5 mm, apex acute-apiculate; lateral lobes 4-10 mm long. Corolla (17.5) 23-31 (34.5) mm long, white, pale blue or mauve, limb glandular-pilose externally; tube (10.5) 13-18 mm long, funnel-shaped above attachment point of stamens; abaxial lobe (7)8.5-13.5 x 7.5-10 (12.5) mm, offset by 2.5-4.5 mm; lateral lobes (5)7-8.5(10.5) x (4)5.5-7.5(10.5) mm; adaxial lobes as lateral pair but (2.5)3.5-5.5(7) mm wide. Stamens attached 4.5-7.5 mm from base of corolla; filaments (10.5)14.5-18 (24) mm long; anthers 2-3 mm long; lateral staminodes 0.8-1.7 mm long, pubescent with or without shorter glandular hairs, antherodes 0.8-1.2 mm long. Ovary and style glabrous; stigma shortly clavate, 0.3-0.8 mm long. Capsule 9-11 mm long, glabrous. Seeds 4-5 x 3.5-4.5 mm.
