A shrub with a tendency to scramble, or a small straggly tree up to 6 m in height; occurring on mountain slopes and in scrub, along the coastal belt. Bark: grey-brown; young branches pale brown and covered with lenticels. Leaves: rather small, 1-4 x 2-5 cm but usually about 2 x 2.5-3 cm, divided for almost two-thirds their length; lobes semicircular; petiole up to 1.5 cm long, slender. Flowers: with white, slightly crinkly petals, 3-5 x 1-1.5 cm; sweetly scented; terminal, in clusters of 2-6 (Oct.-Dec.). Fruit: a long, slender, flat pod, up to 14 x 2 cm (Dec.-Apr.).
Tree or shrub, 3-8 m high. Branches puberulous when young. Leaves alternate, petioled; lamina bilobed apically to ± 2/3 down; lobes ± semi-circular. Inflorescences 2-6-flowered, terminal racemes. Flowers bisexual, axillary. Calyx: sepals 5; spathaceous. Petals 5, white, slightly crisped. Stamens 10, fertile. Gynoecium 1-carpelled, with gynophore; ovary 1-loculed, few ovules; style 6-15 mm long, pubescent. Flowering time Oct.-Mar. Pod linear-oblong to oblanceolate, 50-140 x 10-20 mm, woody, dehiscent. Seeds light brown, oval to ± circular, 8 x 6 mm.
