Characteristics

Leaves: petiole 0.6–1.5 cm; lamina (2)3–7(9.2) cm from base of midrib to tip of lobes, lobed for half to two thirds of its length with the angle between the lobes 20–45°, cordate to sometimes truncate at the base, the lobes rather narrow and often rather distinctly obtusely pointed, glabrescent above, fairly densely covered with irregularly spreading brown hairs beneath, especially on the rather prominent veins.

Pods 7–16.5 × 2–2.5 cm, irregularly oblong to linear-oblong, rusty brown-tomentose when young but somewhat glabrescent when older and revealing a dark reddish-brown surface.
Fertile stamens 5; 5 staminodes united for nearly all their length into a yellow linear-oblong or spathulate strap, 1.5–3 × 1–2.5 cm.
Inflorescence usually 1–5-flowered, these sometimes aggregating into small lax panicles; axes brown-tomentose; pedicels c.4 mm.
Calyx 1.8–3.2 cm, the bud obtusely pointed but often with filiform sepal tips extending beyond, tomentose like the hypanthium.
Petals 3.2–6 cm long, 1.4–2.8 cm broad, elliptic to obovate with undulate-crisped margins, with a claw 0.5–1.8 cm, white.
Hypanthium 2.5–5.2 cm, ± linear but broadening somewhat above, brown-tomentose, longitudinally ribbed.
Young branches tomentellous with spreading brown hairs.
Suffrutex 40 cm high to small tree 3.3 m high.
Ovary brown villous; stigma capitate-peltate.
