Shrub or small tree 1-7(10) m high, or sometimes scrambling up to 10 m by means of branch tendrils, or occasionally a suffrutex up to only 0.4 m high. Young branches rather finely brown-or grey-brown, spreading or appressed-pubescent. Leaves: petiole 0.4-2.2 cm; lamina 1-7(8) cm from base of midrib to tip of lobes, lobed from one third to two thirds of its length with the angle between the lobes acute to obtuse, cordate to truncate at the base, the lobes rounded to slightly obtusely pointed, glabrous to minutely pubescent above, minutely appressed-pubescent or fairly densely spreading-or ascending-pubescent beneath. Inflorescences 1-10-flowered and these sometimes aggregating into panicles; axes usually brown-pubescent to-tomentellous; pedicels up to c.1 cm, merging into the hypanthium. Hypanthium (1.5)2.5-5.5(6.5) cm, ± linear but broadening somewhat above, densely pubescent to tomentellous, longitudinally ribbed. Calyx (1.7)2.2-4.5 cm, in bud usually narrowed into a terminal beak with free tips of sepals showing. Petals white (rarely with pink blotches), 2.2-8.4 cm long, 0.6-2.2(4.2) cm broad, elliptic to elliptic-oblanceolate with strongly undulate-crisped margins, with a claw 0.2-1.5 cm long. Fertile stamens 5; filaments white to deep red or purplish. Ovary pubescent to tomentose; stigma capitate-peltate. Pods dark reddish-brown, woody, 10-24 cm long, (1.3)1.7-4.7 cm broad, ± linear-oblong or sometimes narrowed towards the base, not markedly parallel-sided, glabrescent, 4-10-seeded. Seeds dark purplish brown, 1.3-3 cm long, 0.8-1.8 cm broad, strongly compressed, oblong to circular.
Shrub or tree 2–8 m. high.. Young branchlets ± densely brown-pubescent or-puberulous.. Leaves often wider than long, 2–8 cm. long, 2–10 cm. wide, bilobed to about one-third to two-thirds way down, minutely appressed-puberulous on lower surface; lobes rounded.. Racemes short, often aggregated terminally.. Flower-buds: upper part (i.e. sepals) linear to linear-lanceolate in outline, 3–5 cm. long before anthesis.. Hypanthium 2–4 cm. long, finely longitudinally sulcate.. Petals white or marked with pink spots, narrowly elliptic to oblanceolate-elliptic, 4–7.5 cm. long, 1–2.7 cm. wide, with very crisped margins and the midrib pubescent outside and with many small orange ? glands which are also present in the indumentum of the young vegetative parts.. Fertile stamens 5.. Stigma 2.5–3 mm. in diameter, terminal, peltate, abruptly enlarged from the style.. Pods woody, dehiscent, linear-oblong or oblanceolate-oblong, 10–24 cm. long, (2.5–)3–4.7 cm. wide.. Seeds deep chestnut-purple, irregularly oblong to obovate or subcircular, 1.6–3 cm. long, 1.1–1.8 cm. wide; funicle very short and thick.. Fig. 47, p. 212.
An untidy spreading bush. It grows 3-4 m high. It can be 9 m high. The bark is dark and powdery and flakes off in strips. The leaves have lobes for almost half their length. The lobes are oval. They are 3.5-6 cm long and 3-8 cm wide. The base of the leaf is deeply lobed. The flowers are long and crinkled with white petals. Flowers are 8 cm long by 1-1.5 cm wide. The fruit is a large brown pod. These are 12-18 cm long by 3-6 cm wide. They split open rapidly forming a spiral.
