Characteristics

Leaves: petiole 0.3–1.1 cm; lamina 1–4.5 cm from base of midrib to tip of lobes, lobed for a half to two thirds of its length with the notch angle between the lobes 20–50°, weakly to strongly cordate at the base, the lobes ± rounded at the apex, glabrous above, irregularly spreading pubescent beneath, the veins rather prominent beneath.

Inflorescences 3–15-flowered, the flowers densely crowded onto short lateral shoots 1–3 cm long, these sometimes tending to aggregate into narrow leafy panicles; axes brown-or greyish-tomentellous; pedicels up to 4 mm.
Petals pink or less often white, 1.2–2.5(3.2) cm long, 0.4–1(1.4) cm broad, elliptic to obovate with somewhat undulate margins and a short claw.
Hypanthium 0.5–1 cm, linear-oblong to obconical, brown-or grey-tomentose to villous, rather obscurely longitudinally ridged.
Fertile stamens 5; staminodes united into a strap up to 2 mm broad and almost equalling the stamens.
Pods dark reddish-brown, 8–14 × 1.7–2.2 cm, linear-oblong, pubescent when young but glabrescent.
Young branches grey-or brown-pubescent to tomentellous.
Shrub to small tree 1–3 m or scrambling up to 5 m.
Calyx 0.8–1.3 cm, ± villous like the hypanthium.
Ovary villous; stigma capitate-peltate.
