Characteristics

Dioicous, olivaceous green, with a strong aromatic smell. Stem up to 3 cm long, about 160 µ in diameter, ventrally branched, with flagella. Leave about 1 mm long, ovate-ligulate, convex almost longitudinally inserted, lower margin almost straight, upper margin arched, base covering about 1/3 of the stem on the dorsal face or sometimes meeting the opposite leaf, apex shortly and obtusely 3(-2) dentate. Marginal cells 13-16 µ, 3 rows of the interior cells are larger, up to 20 x 30 µ, forming a vitta. Cell walls thick, trigones absent-± small, cuticle papillose. Oil bodies 1-2 per cell, larger in the cells of the vitta, homogeneous, colourless. Amphigaslria small, usually free from the leaves, to 2/5 4-lobate, lobes lanceolate. Perianth to1.6 mm long, ovate, triplicate, mouth constricted, irregularly ciliate-dentate. Bracts and bracteoles oblong, with apex irregularly ciliate-dentate and margin ± dentate. Spores brown, 12-14 µ in diameter, finely papillose, contains a large chloroplast. Elaters bispirate, 8-10 x 140-300 µ.
