Characteristics

Female flowers: tepals 5, coloured as in the male; outer two 30–32 × 17–19 mm., subelliptic, inner two 28–30 × 18–23 mm., broadly obovate, innermost one 23–27 × 18–20 mm.; styles divided to c. 1/2 their length, the branches spirally twisted; ovary 13 × 6–7 mm., linear-oblong, with 3 narrow wings up to 2 mm. wide; placentae bifid.

Leaves glabrous, the lower ones petiolate, upper ones ± sessile; laminae 9–14 cm. long, ovate-acute to-cuspidate, fleshy, the margin obscurely and irregularly serrate; petioles 0–4 cm. long; stipules 6–20 × 3–10 mm., oblong-acute, entire-margined, deciduous.
Male flowers: tepals 2 + 2, white or palest pink; outer pair 25–34 × 14–22 mm., linear-oblong, inner pair 20–31 × 15–21 mm., broadly oblong; filaments 1·5–3 mm. long.
Capsule 16–26 × 12–15 mm., ellipsoid, the wings subequal, up to 5 mm. wide, narrowly triangular, almost parallel-sided and thus making the fruit ± oblong in outline.
Flowers scented, in terminal and axillary dichasial cymes with 2–3 dichasia; peduncles 2–11 cm. long; primary dichasial branches 0·5–4 cm. long.
Stems glabrous, reddish, unbranched, arising from a large tuber.
Bracts 15–24 × 11–15 mm., ovate, membranous, conspicuous.
