Characteristics

Leaves glabrous, petiolate; laminae 2–7(10) cm. long, ± sub-orbicular in outline, not or shallowly lobed, truncate to slightly cordate at the base; margins subentire, irregularly crenulate; petioles 0·4–3·5(7) cm. long; stipules 5–22 mm. long, broadly ovate to oblong-acute, brownish, membranous, entire-margined.

Female flowers: tepals 5, the outer 4 6–12 × 4–6 mm., elliptic to oblong, the innermost smaller; ovary 4–8 × 4–7 mm., ovoid; styles 2·2–3·5 mm. long, divided to 1/2 their length, the branches stigmatic and spirally twisted; placentae bifid.
Fruits 6–10 x 5–8 mm. excluding wings, globose, ovoid or ellipsoid; wings very unequal: largest 7–15 mm. wide, triangular, the upper edge at an acute or obtuse angle to the fruit axis; second and third wings much smaller.
Male flowers: tepals 2 + 2, pale to bright pink; outer pair 9–14 × 8–12 mm., suborbicular; inner pair 5–7 × 3–4 mm., obovate; filaments 1–2 mm. long.
Stems erect, simple or sparsely branched, glabrous; basal tuber small, ellipsoid or globose, pinkish, densely covered with brown hairs.
Flowers in terminal and axillary dichasial cymes with 1–2 dichasia; peduncles 0·3–4·5 cm. long.
Bracts 1–2 mm. long, ovate, brownish, membranous.
