Characteristics

Leaves petiolate; lamina 2–4·5 cm. long, ± ovate in outline, simple or very shallowly and obtusely lobed, the margin subentire to finely serrate; superior surface green, ± glabrous to moderately crispate-hirsute, inferior surface green to dark red, moderately to densely crispate-hirsute especially towards the point of attachment, the indumentum continuing along the petiole; petiole 7–20 mm. long; stipules 5–7 × 2–5 mm., linear to ovate, membranous, pinkish, with shortly laciniate margin.

Capsule 5–6 × 3·5–5 mm. excluding wings, ellipsoid; wings very unequal, triangular, the largest 4-5 mm. wide with the upper edge ± horizontal, the next a little narrower, the third very narrow; wing extending c. 1 mm. beyond capsule at the base but not all at the apex.
Female flowers: tepals 3, 6–8 mm. long, pink, suborbicular to broadly elliptic, slightly unequal; styles divided to c. 1/2 their length, the branches stigmatic and spirally twisted; ovary ellipsoid, 3-winged; placentae bipartite.
Flowers in terminal and axillary few-flowered cymes; peduncles 1–2 cm. long; primary dichasial branches c. 1 cm. long; peduncles and branches of inflorescence crispate-hirsute.
Male flowers: tepals 4, pink; outer pair 9–10 × 9–10 mm., ± suborbicular; inner pair 4 × 1·5 mm., narrowly obovate; filaments c. 1 mm. long.
Stems sparsely to densely crispate-hirsute, erect, unbranched, apparently arising from a small tuber.
