Characteristics

A glabrous, herbaceous perennial herb, often tuberous or the stem decumbent at the base, the nodes swollen and rooting. Stems up to 1 m tall, stout, fleshy, often pinkish or reddish, simple or branched, leafy throughout. Stipules lanceolate, membranous, brown. Leaves obliquely ovate-acuminate, up to 18 x 14 cm, but often only about half that size, base cordate, margin 5-7-lobed, lobes more or less triangular, coarsely and irregularly toothed or occasionally crenate, light green and waxy above, paler below, veins often reddish, petioles up to 15 cm long, often reddish. Inflorescences in the upper leaf axils. Flowers up to 3 cm across, usually pink, sometimes white or white flushed pink, tepals of <3 flowers usually 4, occasionally 2 or 3, of 9 flowers usually 5. Fruits 3-winged, more or less rounded-oblong or cuneiform in outline, 2 x 2-3 cm across the wings, placentae split, appearing bifurcate in transverse section.

Leaves glabrous, petiolate; laminae 5–17 cm. long, ovate in outline, with 3–6 triangular lobes, often cordate at the base; sinuses between lobes 1/4–1/2 × length of lamina; margins irregularly and very shallowly dentate; petioles (1)3·5–14 cm. long; stipules 5–13 mm. long, linear-lanceolate to ovate, reddish-brown when dry, entire.
Capsule 12–16 × 7–9 mm. excluding wings, ellipsoid or cylindrical; wings very variable in shape, elliptic, oblong or triangular with the upper edge ± horizontal; largest wing up to 1 cm. wide, the next almost the same, the third much narrower; wing extending beyond capsule 1–3 mm. distally, 2–4 mm. proximally.
Female flowers: tepals 5, pink; outer ones 6–17 mm. long, elliptic to suborbicular, inner ones shorter and narrower; styles divided to c. 1/2 their length, the branches stigmatic and spirally twisted; ovary 8–14 × 4–7 mm., oblong, 3-winged; placentae bifid.
Male flowers: tepals 2 + 2, pink; outer pair 8–13 × 11–17 mm., suborbicular to transversely elliptic, often cordate at base; inner pair 5–8 × 3–4 mm., obovate; filaments 2–3 mm. long.
Perennial herb, up to 1 m high. Stems and leaves glabrous. Leaf margin lobed as well as toothed. Flowers usually pink, sometimes white or white flushed pink.
Flowers in terminal and axillary dichasial cymes with 2–3 dichasia; peduncles 6–11 cm. long; primary dichasial branches 1·5–3 cm. long.
