Characteristics

Leaves papyraceous to thinly coriaceous, glabrous, drying greenish above, pale brown beneath; petiole 0.6–1.3 cm long, canaliculate above, rough; lamina (6)13–24 x (2.3)4–8 cm, oblong-lanceolate to obovate-oblong, acute to shortly acuminate at the apex, cuneate at the base; slightly revolute and undulate on the margins; midrib and nerves impressed above, prominent below, venation finely reticulate; lateral nerves in 6–9 pairs.

Staminodes 6 in 2 whorls, (whorls 3 and 4); those in the third whorl c. 1 mm long, cylindrical, sometimes 1 or 2 are fertile with anthers dehiscing laterally and with 2 globose glands at the base; those in the fourth whorl 0.5–0.8 mm long and 0.3–0.6 mm wide at the base, ± triangular to cordiform, puberulous outside, glabrescent inside.
Flowers pinkish to reddish, 2–3 mm long and 2–3 mm in diameter at anthesis, appressed-puberulous; pedicels 1–4 mm long; receptacle c. 1 mm long, cylindrical to ± campanulate, puberulous outside, glabrous inside; tepals c. 1 mm long, broadly ovate, obtuse or rounded at the apex, puberulous, strongly ciliate.
Inflorescence a panicle of cymes in the axils of subterminal leaves; panicles 4–15 cm long, lax, many-flowered, whitish puberulous; peduncles 0.5–2 cm long.
A shrub or small tree up to 6 m high; bark green to greyish, smooth; young branches greyish or dark reddish, striate, glabrous.
Stamens 6(8), pubescent, arranged in 2 whorls; filaments c. 0.6 x 0.6 mm, pubescent; anthers 0.2 mm long dehiscing extrorsely.
Drupe brownish-purple, 3.5–6.0 x 2.0–2.5 cm, ellipsoid or fusiform and curved, mucronate at the apex.
Ovary 0.8–1.0 mm long, globose, puberulous towards the apex, style 0.5–1.0 mm long.
Mature ovary not enveloped by receptacle.
