Characteristics

Leaf blades 9–16 × 3–6 cm, oblong-elliptic to oblanceolate, acute to shortly acuminate at the apex, cuneate at the base, glabrous above, minutely obscurely puberulous beneath with midrib and lateral nerves ± densely clothed in short spreading hairs; petiole 1–3(5) mm long, channelled and margined; stipules brown, 1–4 × 0.4–2 cm, lanceolate or ovate, filiform-acuminate at the apex, papery and persistent.

Corolla white or cream-coloured; tube very slender, 7–11 mm long, 1 mm in diameter, enlarged at the apex to 2.5 mm wide for c. 3 mm, strigose-pubescent outside; lobes 3 × 1.5–2 mm, narrowly ovate, acuminate.
Fruit red or blackish, c. 5 mm in diameter, ovoid or subglobose, ± pubescent; pedicel and calyx limb accrescent, 2–3 mm long; seeds 55–75.
Inflorescence a much contracted thyrse, 3–7 × 2–3 cm, the supporting node often with reduced leaves; true peduncle 0–2 cm long.
Calyx tube 1.5 mm long, ovoid, densely hairy; limb-tube papery, 1.2–1.5 mm long, denticulate.
Evergreen shrub 1.8–5 m tall; branchlets often reddish, pubescent later glabrescent.
Flower buds fusiform, apiculate, densely silvery strigose-pubescent.
Style and anthers just reaching to or beyond the corolla throat.
