Characteristics

Small tree or shrub 1.8–4(–5) m. tall; branches square in cross section, glabrous except for a short line of adpressed hairs below the nodes.. Leaf-blades discolorous, elliptic, 9–28 cm. long, 4.4–12 cm. wide, apex acute or shortly acuminate, base cuneate or truncate and then shortly cuneate, with 11–14 pairs of lateral nerves, both surfaces sparsely covered with hairs, denser on the midrib above and dense and adpressed on the mid-and lateral nerves beneath; petiole 1–2.3 cm. long, sparsely covered with adpressed hairs or glabrous except for the crests of the channels; stipules ovate, narrowing at the connate portion, then widening at the base, 1–2 cm. long and (0.4–)0.7–1.2 cm. wide, connate for ± 1.5 mm. above the node, apex usually obtuse, or sometimes rounded or acute, glabrous except for a central line of adpressed hairs outside.. Flowers closely packed in sessile spherical heads 1.3–3.5 cm. diameter; pedicels short and thick, 0.8–1.5 mm. long; bracteoles narrowly triangular, sometimes with 2 filiform lobes on either side, 5.3–11 mm. long and 1.5–3 mm. wide, with sparse adpressed hairs outside.. Calyx adpressed hirsute, dense at the base and becoming sparse towards the lobes; tube cylindrical, 1.4–3 mm. long and 1.5–2.5 mm. wide; limb 3.5–4.4 mm. long and 3.25–3.5 mm. wide, bearing narrowly triangular lobes 2–4.8 mm. long and 0.5–1.2 mm. wide, apex caudate.. Corolla white; tube 6–6.8 mm. long, widening 3.2–3.6 mm. above the base, occasionally distinctly widened at the base, 4–4.5 mm. wide at top, 2–2.2 mm. wide below, hairy on widened portion outside and with dense yellow hairs at throat and between anthers within; lobes ovate, 6–6.6 mm. long and 2–3 mm. wide, apex long-caudate, glabrous or with a few hairs near the margins outside.. Anthers 1.9–2.6(–3) mm. long, with acuminate apex 0.2–0.5 mm. long.. Disc annular, 1.3–2 mm. diameter and 0.7–1 mm. deep.. Style 3–3.5 mm. long; stigma 3.6–5.3 mm. long.. Infructescences ± globose, 5.5–8.8 cm. diameter, the accrescent pedicels reaching 1–2.7 cm. long, glabrous or sparsely hairy..
