Characteristics

Tree up to 40 m by 62 cm ø. Bark rather rough, brown, peeling off" profusely in strips 2-3 cm wide and 2 mm thick. Buttresses up to 4 m high, c. ¾ m out. Stipules lanceolate, 5-10 mm. Leaves elliptic or oblong-elliptic, sometimes ovate-oblong or obovate-oblong, 6-16 by 2.5-8.5 cm; base obtuse or cuneate; apex acute to short-acuminate; nerves (11-)13-15(-19) pairs, slightly elevated or flat above; petiole 1-3 cm. Racemes up to 15 cm long, 1(-2) in a leaf-axil; peduncle short. Flowers subsessile. Calyx lobes broad-ovate or sub-rotundate, 1.5-2 by 1-1.25 mm, obtuse. Petals oblong-elliptic, 2.5-3 by ⅔-1.25 mm, obtuse. Stamens c. 2 mm long, attached beneath the outer margin of the disk; anthers almost deltoid, c. 0.5 mm long and wide, obtuse, free for the lower ⅔, latrorse. Disk cupular, subentire or obscurely notched, the rim usually puberulous. Ovary subglobose c. 1 mm ø, with a tuft of hairs at the apex; styles free, longer than the ovary. Fruits ovoid-oblong to lanceolate, with 2 vertical grooves, much tapered to the apex, 3-3½ by 1-1.25 cm, usually 1-seeded. Seeds ± oblong, usually on a knob-like thickened placenta, completely or sometimes only the lower half enveloped by the aril.

Cymes 3-5-branched, many flowered; peduncle short or nearly absent; pedicel short. Flowers small, yellowish green; sepals linear-lanceolate, ca. 1.5 mm, narrowly acuminate at apex; petals narrowly obovate or oblong-lanceolate, ca. 2 mm, subrounded at apex. Filament ca. 2 mm. Ovary compressed globose, base surrounded by disk; styles 2, thick and large, basally with tufted hairs; stigma small. Capsule narrow and long ovoid, ca. 3 × 1-1.2 cm, steeply tapering to apex, with 2 vertical grooves. Seeds 1, elliptic-ovoid, ca. 1.5 cm, brown or brown-red, glossy; aril covering most of seed, white or brown.
